Pappu Can' t Dance Saala is being promoted as a slice of life film, just like the ones which we saw in the 70' s and which are still relevant today like Golmaal and Khatta Metha. This film is directed by Saurabh Shukla and he has been known to make simple and sweet films. Vinay Pathak has had a string of releases this year and none of them have fared well. Neha Dhupia also has not been on the forefront of any successful films of late. Therefore, a lot is riding on the film for the actors and the director.
Vidyadhar Aracharya (Vinay Pathak) is an educated Benarasi Babu, full of ethics and values. He moves to Mumbai and is stunned by the fast life and the lack of values in the people living here. He rents an apartment next to Mehak Malvade (Neha Dhupia), who is a dancer and has performed in a few Bollywood films. They get off on the wrong foot and start hating each other. However, it does not take long for hate to turn into love, but will this happen in the case of Benarasi Babu?
Pappu Can' t Dance Saala is a decent attempt but remains that. The film does not go forward and lacks that zing that is supposed to be in such a film. Slice-of-life films need to have that amazing second half that keeps you gripped and rooting for the central characters. Sadly, you will not feel a connection between the two lead characters. Also, when the expected end takes place, you are not really rooting for it to happen.
The script is weak. The concept is good and the film starts of really well, but it cannot maintain the pace throughout the film and by the end of it, the sweet memories of a good first half are wiped away. Some of the dialogues are funny and sit well, but they are few and far. The second half is the biggest letdown and there is nothing to write about it.
The direction by Saurabh Shukla is good but the poor second half has to be blamed on him as well. After a promising first half, the rest is a downhill barrel roll. Though, he has his heart in the right place, it does not come across in the film. There are some needless portions in the film that could have been done without. He tries well but the end product is not a success.
The acting is by both the leads is good. Vinay is always convincing as the middle class common man. He plays the role with sincerity. Neha Dhupia also gives a good performance. She handles the emotional scenes really well. However, both the characters are so strongly defined that there is no chemistry between them. The supporting characters are placed in insignificant roles. Naseeruddin Shah has a miniscule role. This is another drawback; you cannot really have the camera follow the lives of the lead pair exclusively. It makes the film boring and that is what has happened.
The music is alright, barring the peppy number filmed on Neha Dhupia, its ordinary. The cinematography is decent and so is the editing. The production value of the film is also good. Pappu Can' t Dance Saala was promoted well. The film will get an initial opening, but will not be able to sustain itself through the week. It has tough competition from Mission Impossible 4: Ghost Protocol and will not be able to survive.
Had the second half been better, the film would have hit the right note with the audience. Sadly, it ends up being another blot on Vinay Pathak' s career. He just seems to have the worst luck as he has performs well but none of his recent films have done well. Let' s hope he gets his due credit soon.
Verdict: Pappu Can' t Dance Saala suffers from the same problem many films suffer from, poor second half. That proves to be the undoing.
