Editor Review: Dam 999 Movie Review
Dam 999 is not a story about the dam, but it is about the complicated personal lives of the people in the town near the dam. The performances are bad and the story is even worse. Consider yourself lucky if you have not watched this film. Rating: *1/2

The title, Dam 999 is a shot at the agreement between the states of Tamil Nadu and Kerala. The Tamil Nadu government has an agreement with the Kerala government that they will have control of the Mullaperiyar dam for 999 years, hence the name Dam 999. Seemingly, the film is about the dam and in the backdrop, there is a love story that plays out.

Vinay (Vinay Rai), a mariner by profession comes back to his hometown along with his diabetic son (Jineet Rath) and wants to get him treated from his father. His father (Rajit Kapoor) is an ayurvedic practitioner and is happy to see his son return. The doctor has a helper, Meera (Vimala Raman), who is Vinay' s former girlfriend. They could not get married as their horoscopes did not align well together and their marriage would have meant disaster. However, Vinay is now estranged from his wife Sandra (Linda Arsenio) and starts coming close to Meera again.

Vinay also has brought along a colleague, Captain Fredrick Brown (Joshua Fredrick Smith). Fredrick also has old ties with the town as his father was once the mayor here but was murdered. His son-in-law, Durai (Aashish Vidyarthi), succeeds him as a mayor. Durai is married to Fredrick' s handicapped sister, Maria (Jaala Pickering) and tortures her. Durai is corrupt and has built a dam on the local river with flimsy materials and pocketed the rest of the amount.

To add more complications, Vinay' s wife, Sandra shows up and wants to work things out with Vinay. She is also a documentary filmmaker and covers the story of the dam. She realizes that the dam is not safe and is about to break. The danger is imminent. The inevitable happens, but who all survive? And what further complication they have in store?

Misleading title; the film is about the complicated lives of the people of the town. The dam is covered only for a few minutes in the film. Also, it is hard to imagine that people living in rural India have such complicated lives. The whole film looks like it was made to promote ayurved tourism in the country.

The writers, Sohan Roy and Rob Tobin, require lessons in screenplay writing. Some scenes are forced in for no apparent reason. The story is needlessly complicated and tries to cover too many topics at once. The end result is a truly horrendous story that will consistently bore you till the end. The dialogues are obvious. The attempts at humor remain to be attempts; instead, the emotional scenes will make you laugh.

Sohan Roy has failed miserably as the director. There seems to be no contribution from him other than yelling ' action' and ' cut' . Only the few scenes of the dam bursting are well filmed. He also has not handled any of the actors well. He seems to have only worked with the cinematographer of the film and the rest were given a free run.

Other than Ashish Vidyarathi, there is no other actor who has done a decent act. Vinay Rai is one of the stoniest faced actors of recent times. Linda Arsenio, in her second Indian film is not that good. Rajit Kapoor tries hard but is a letdown by a poorly written role. The rest of the cast is bad and look quite amateurish. The whole film is rife with bad acting.

The cinematography is good. The end scenes when the dam bursts are well filmed. Also, the locales and natural beauty of Kerala is captured well. However, it all looks like a Kerala Tourism advertisement and add no value to the film. The editing is average. The music is bad; there is a song in Hindi and another in Malayalam, none of them are good and only increase the torture quotient of the film.

The 3D technology is a waste in the whole film. Only the scene where the dam bursts looks good but for the rest of the movie, 3D technology was not needed. The production value is good but money has been spent on needless things. The high budget will only increase the pain for the producer.

Since Dam 999 is banned by the Tamil Nadu government, it will get a good response in the opening few days but once the audience realizes that the film is bad, the crowds will disappear soon. The film will not be able to hold against Desi Boyz which is doing well because of the performances and music.

Rating: *1/2

Verdict: It would be foolish to watch the complete film just to see the dam bursting scenes. Avoid Dam 999 to save hard earned money.
