If a film becomes a hit, immediately it is announced that the film will have a sequel. Are our filmmakers so out of original ideas that they immediately want to make a sequel to the original. Of course there are a few technical advantages of making a sequel; there is no need for character establishment as the audience is familiar with the lead character. However, many filmmakers make the mistake of making the film exactly like its prequel. There is no freshness and the screenplay it almost like a carbon copy. The makers of Hangover 2 made the same mistake. Let’s see if the makers of Bheja Fry 2 have done the same mistake.
Bharat Bhushan (Vinay Pathak) is back. This time he wants to pursue his dream of becoming a singer. He enters a reality singing competition and wins it. The prize is a small amount of money and a cruise trip. On the cruise, he runs into Ajit Talwar (Kay Kay Menon), who is a corrupt businessman and on the run from tax inspector M. T. Shekaran (Suresh Menon). Shekaran too is on the cruise and in disguise. Talwar is wary of Bharat Bhusan knowing that he is a tax inspector, while Bharat Bhusan tries his best to impress Talwar because he has connections in the media.
Something happens and the Talwar and Bharat Bhushan get stranded on an empty island. On the island, they are taken hostage by a crazy Amol Gupte. How will they get out? Will someone look for them? And what kind of new hell will Bharat Bhushan create this time around? These are the questions to be answered.
Let’s get straight to the point; this film is nowhere near as funny as Bheja Fry. The first film worked because the film was genuinely funny. This film is exactly the opposite. Bheja Fry 2 tries a little too hard and fails even harder. Although, the storyline is different from the previous film, it is not funny and most of the jokes and gags fail.
The story of the film has a lot of potential, but none of the potential is turned to laughter. I know it might not be fair to compare it to the previous film, but that is the hazard of making a sequel. The first film was made on a small budget and shot in just a handful locations. May be this was the fact that made the film simple and funny. In Bheja Fry 2, the locations are grand and film is shot in many outdoor locations, this is what probably took away from the charm of the film. They should have kept is simple and rest would have been easy.
Sagar Ballary does an okay job, but he has needlessly complicated the film. The many twist and turns in the story seem out of place. The screenplay too is not that funny. The director should have paid more attention to the writing. He gets good performance out of the actors, but then again, most of them are seasoned performers, so not much effort is required. He also fails to take the film to next level of madness that is expected in a sequel.
The acting department does a good job. Vinay Pathak is solid as always. He is the only saving grace of the film, but he to can only do so much with unfunny lines. Vinay has always been a great actor and many thought that Bheja Fry 2 might catapult him into the big leagues, but sadly that might not happen. Kay Kay Menon is good too, but the most disappointing part was from Amol Gupte. His role could have been better written.
The cinematography and the editing are decent, but there is nothing they could have added to the film. There are two songs in the film this time around, and both of them are decent. However, there was really no need for them in the film.
The production value of the film is good, but like stated before, the foreign locales and the cruise ship and many other such things has only complicated the story and took away the earthy charm of the film. The producer might make some money initially as fans of the previous film will throng to see the film. However, word of mouth will catch on and this film will see low numbers afterwards.
Verdict: Bheja Fry 2 has the value of a bhurji fry. This film will not be a hit, but will make some money initially.
